Bill was one of my closest friends in High school. He and his brother, Bob, were the first friends I made when my folks moved to Santa Maria just before the start of our freshman year of school. One day before school started, Bill and I walked into his home and met the swimming coach, Phil Wahl. I had intended to go out for football but this meeting changed my mind. Bill and I both started working out in the old plunge and we swam and played water polo together all through high school. Bill was the most valuable swimmer in his junior year. We also learned to play tennis together. I fixed him up on his first date and we doubled. We had News Press paper routes and Los Angeles Times routes and played water polo together at Cal Poly, as well. We both served in the Navy. Bill was on nuclear submarines and later became the sound engineer for the Beach Boys.
