Don ROGERS (2002)

Don Robert Rogers died unexpectedly of a heart attack.  Don was born in Bakersfield, the eldest of four children.  His family moved to Santa Maria when he was fifteen.  After SMHS, he entered the US Navy and served on the USS Ranger until 1964.  He was discharged, married and returned to Santa Maria.  He joined the CA Highway Patrol in 1968.  He served as a traffic officer and a union area representative.  After retiring in 1990 he fulfilled his lifelong passion by becoming a machinist and full-time gunsmith.  He was well known for his love of Black Powder Rifles and shooting Black Powder Cartridge Silhouettes.   He and Judy traveled throughout CA for various matches and to Raton, New Mexico for the annual National Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette match held every August.  He revived the Avenal Gun Club in 1997 by starting a monthly shoot and was instrumental in the renovation of the club.   He published an article for Rifle magazine in April, 1993 and was a member of the NRA.  Computers became a hobby and as a self-taught technical wizard built many computers for family and friends.  He is survived by his wife Judy, his parents, 4 children, 7 grandchildren, three siblings and many nieces and nephews and his faithful friend “Smoke” the wonder dog.
